In my last blog I wondered at Google's methods for ranking websites.  I also mentioned Yahoo and the fact that they had a second website of mine ranked #1 for two keyphrases and #2 for two others.  I had kept high, first page rankings in Yahoo for months with that site.  Well, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.

I was selling products at a regular pace, when suddenly the sales went south.  I searched my keywords in Yahoo and was surprised (to say the least) to see that my site dropped from #2 to #9 for one keyphrase, from #2 to #58 for a second keyphrase, from #1 to #2 for a third, and from #1 to #10 for the fourth phrase.

I also did some more searching to find where this site (websitedoit.com) was ranked.  While scrolling through the results, I  ran onto a page at position #66 that was from a third website of mine.  Problem is, that page hasn't even been part of that website for several months.  The link was obviously taking me to an old page that Yahoo had cached, even though I wasn't clicking on the "cached" link.

Anyway, back to that first website.  It began rising in the rankings over the next several days and, at the time of this writing, is back to #3 for the first keyphrase, #32 for the second, #1 for the third and #11 for the fourth.  Still, 2 out of 4 of these keyphrases have dropped significantly in the rankings, adversely affecting sales.

So what's going on?  The present results have been holding steady for about two weeks, so apparently Yahoo has made a change in their search algorithm.  The non-exisiting page I found in their search results must simply have been an anomoly during this shakeup.

In roughly the same time period my example website began moving up in the Google rankings and is presently at #45 for the first keyphrase, #44 for the second, #69 for the third and #79 for the fourth.  And Google doesn't appear to be finished with their changes just yet.  The rankings continue to vary somewhat daily, and the total number of pages (all sites) the search results are yielding for my keyphrases continue to be fewer and fewer.

This is good news for me and I really need to capitalize on it.  I know what I need to do, but haven't yet decided just how to go about it.  I've even decided to abandon my third website so I can concentrate my efforts on the example site and this one.

Search engines are constantly changing, (hopefully) improving the results of searches.  It certainly should be their goal to provide the most relevant results possible, depending on what searchers are looking for.

Our goal, as webguys (and webgals), should be to publish web pages that contain the useful information others desire.
