How Important is PageRank?
January 18, 2007

PageRank or PR is a number that Google assigns to every indexed page of your website.  While it's unclear just how Google calculates the rankings, it is very clear that some webmasters place a great deal of importance on this number.

Unless you downloaded and installed the Google toolbar in your browser, you may not have even been exposed to pagerank.  The Google toolbar contains a little bar graph near its center that shows the pagerank of each web page you visit.  The more green on the graph, the higher the PR.  The actual range of pagerank on the graph is from 0 to 10.  Guess where Google.com ranks.  Yep, 10.

By comparison, the Yahoo.com search page comes in at 9.  So, basically, Google is a perfect 10 and everybody else is something less than perfect.  I can live with that considering Google is ranking pages using their own criteria.

So taking the above into consideration, let's tackle a couple of questions.

Question 1: How important is it that your pages have a high PR?

Answer 1: It's not all that important.  I have two websites that are both on the first page of results in a Google search.  They are right below the big boys, the companies everyone has heard of.

Question 2. Can your website rank well in the search engine results without a high PR?

Answer 2. Yes.  If you look at the PR of their pages, you'll see 5's, 6's and 7's.  Look at mine and you see 3 and 4.  I'm ranked higher in the results than many webpages that have a higher PR.

So, what's the answer to this phenomenon?  Who knows and, really, who cares?  If your site is well contructed and has good content, and you have done sufficient on-page and off-page optimization, your search engine rankings should take care of themselves.

I occasionally receive link trade requests from other webmasters who are willing to trade only if you put their link on a PR2 or greater page.  Since the last Google update, all of my links pages have dropped to PR0, and I'm certainly not going to put someone's link on one of my content pages.  I just decline those requests.

But, why did my reciprocal links pages lose PR?  Because Google has devalued reciprocal links.  They believe (and probably rightfully so) that swapping links with someone doesn't give your site or the swapee's site any more importance or credibility.

It's okay to continue trading links with related websites since Yahoo and MSN still place a value on them.  And don't worry if the sites you are trading with have a low PR.  Check the site out for good content and if it passes the test, trade links with it.

See ya next time.
