Typing Mistakes Can Hurt Your Website
June 15, 2007

Keywords and written content are two of the most important elements of any website.  For this reason, it is  essential that spelling and typing mistakes be eliminated.  Obviously, not everyone is a spelling bee champ, but  since most wysiwyg website programs have built in text editors with spellcheck, you don't need to be.  Of course,  you have to remember to use the spellchecker to review your work.

It's likely that you will need to use a word that isn't in the spellchecker's database, so when it throws up a red  flag, make sure you "manually" check the spelling before telling it to ignore the word or add it to its dictionary.

The idea for this commentary came from one of my own silly mistakes.  I noticed that this website had suddenly  disappeared from the first page of Google results for the search terms "wysiwyg website software."  I had recently  made some changes to the website, one of which was to the meta keywords section of the html code.

Instead of using the abbreviation wysiwyg (what you see is what you get), I had mistakenly typed wywiwyg.  When  Google's spider came-a-calling, it read those keywords and obviously "thought?" the site was categorized  incorrectly.  In Google's defense, if someone had been looking for (the mispelled) wywiwyg website software, they  probably would have found it.

After discovering the problem, I revised the spelling and waited patiently for the Googlebot to discover my correction.  Now, all is once again right with the world.
