Website Builder Software Reviews
The unbiased reviews given here are are based solely on the reviewer's limited experience with, or knowledge of, each of the programs featured on this website. These programs are listed below in order of difficulty level, beginning with the easiest to use.
Flash Website Builder by IntroWizard
As the name IntroWizard implies, this software provides a good introduction to flash website creation, using "wizards" to produce web pages with animated areas and the "flashy" style that these websites are noted for. You can create up to thirteen pages per website while each page can have as many as four images. Depending on the size image you choose to add, it's likely only a portion of the image will show. However, you can make the image clickable, so that when it's clicked it opens up full size in a separate browser window.
There are nearly two dozen templates to choose from, each with it's own specific flash effects. You have the option of changing the background color of each template as well as the color of text. Buttons can be linked to other pages or to other websites. You can't reposition template objects or import multimedia, and any real customization isn't possible, but that's also what makes the program easy to use. There is no FTP function included, so you'll need to find a free program or simply use IE as described in the article Web Hosting and FTP. You can enter meta information and create a text website right along with your flash site, so it can be indexed properly by search engines.
One idea the company suggests is to use the software to produce a flash homepage only, which could then be linked to "normal" HTML pages created with other software. Overall, this is a nice program both for beginners who want to have their own attractive, multi-page website, and more experienced users who are unfamiliar with flash, but would like to incorporate one or more flash pages into their site.
Easy Website Pro by PhotonFX
This program provides a bit more latitude for the designer in that there is some customization allowed. Although the basic template can't be changed, you can add a different layout to it and choose a different color scheme as well as specific objects like logos, buttons, sounds, etc.
The Content Page takes you to a visual editor where you can import and resize images and add your text. The basic text editing tools are available to change font types, sizes and colors. Easy Website Pro allows you to import flash movies and media player files here, too. If you want, you can click the tab that says HTML Code and actually edit the code or insert new code directly. There are no graphics creation or graphics editing tools, but that's to be expected, since more tools means more complex. The program is aimed at those with little or no website experience.
The Intro section allows you to choose a flash intro page if you want, or you can turn the flash effect off. The Extras section has some nice options such as choosing colored scrollbars, adding custom scripts and meta tag information, and adding a guestbook or inquiry form. Lastly, you can publish the finished website directly to your web host's server.
The program isn't difficult to use, but does require just a little patience at first. There is a helpful tutorial included to get you started. All-in-all, this is an attractive, well thought out software program that produces great looking web sites.
Web Page Maker by Web Page Maker Software
This is a sweet little WYSIWYG editor. It has lots of features including a true text editor with spellchecker, a good choice of editable navigation bars, javascript extras, drawing tools, gradient effects, forms creation, templates, page transition effects, page centering, and on and on.
It's easy-to-use, with a clean, simple interface. You can drag and drop objects onto the work area, making it easy to start from scratch. Web Page Maker can create entire websites - just keep adding pages with the "add page" command. The page editor accepts the meta title, description and keywords as any program worth its weight should.
To be honest, even though this program looks completely different, it reminds me somewhat of SiteSpinner. It has many of the same commands and options, but unlike SiteSpinner, there is no ability to set transparency of objects and no code viewer. It does have a few extras that SiteSpinner doesn't, however, like the javascript snippets and premade navigation bars with buttons.
The program seems to be aimed at those looking for an easy-to-use website builder, but who also want the option of controlling the design process. The program is fun and simple to use, and while it may lack a few slightly more sophisticated features, it still has plenty of options for most users to turn out top-notch web pages. I definitely give it two thumbs up.
EZGenerator by Image Line Software
This software program contains everything you need to build any kind of website. You don't have to do any actual design work, just choose from any one of 3000 professionally designed website templates and add the features you want.
For those looking to set up a business website and sell their own products, EZGenerator is the only website builder we offer that includes its own ecommerce module, google adsense and newsletter manager.
The work window is clean and well laid out and the template driven interface allows for plenty of customization. The program also includes an image gallery, weblog module, rss, podcasting and plenty of other neat features so you can build an amazing website.
If you're looking to simplify the design process, yet have every tool you could possibly need at your disposal, this program is a great choice and well worth the higher price tag.
Honestly, there are just too many features to go into detail about. Just download the trial and see for yourself!
SiteSpinner V2 by Virtual Mechanics
Here's a program that really let's you put your creativity to use. At first glance, the program looks slightly more imposing than any we've reviewed so far, what with the screen grid and the unfamiliar icons. The appearance is similar to a graphic art or CADD type program, so you quickly realize that you're going to have plenty of design options.
The snap-to-grid function is an invaluable aid in lining up objects and text. There are tools to create any shape object you want, including curves. Images can have transparency applied to them and can then be locked into position individually or by page. Objects and pages can be copied or cloned. Users can create drop-down menus, mouseover effects and web forms, and multimedia files of most popular formats can be imported into a page.
The page editor allows input of meta tag info and contains page settings such as link appearance, background color, create or delete page, center the page, etc. The text editor contains a spell checker with preferences that can be changed. External code can be pasted into the code editor and saved on the page. The code generated by the software itself can't be edited directly, but can be viewed in and copied from a window that can be opened beside the visual editing screen. An html file can't be opened directly, but when opened in a browser the images and text can be selected and dropped directly onto the SiteSpinner editing screen.
If the options seem a little overwhelming at first, users can choose a template instead and modify it to suit their needs. Projects are saved in the proprietary .ims format, but publishing produces all the individual HTML pages complete with image and geometry (graphics) files in their own folders. The FTP function will copy these directly to a web server.
I have grown to greatly appreciate SiteSpinner's features and capabilities. This software has more to offer the true designer than any of the strictly WYSIWYG software featured here. The learning curve is a bit steeper, but the excellent help file, tutorials, and online support forum offer plenty of information should you need it. Overall, a terrific web design program.
BestAddress HTML Editor 2006 Professional by Multimedia Australia
This is a quality offering from Mutimedia Australia. The program offers a DHTML menu builder, some Javascript snippets, spell checking, code checking, auto-completion and an extensive code library. While BestAddress doesn't come with lots of graphics or templates, there are more available online along with some excellent tutorials and references for the software.
The interface looks sort of Microsoft-ish and the screen can be split to show both the code editor and viewer together, so you can see the results of your coding immediately. The program offers source code securing, so others can't right click your webpage in their browser and copy your code.
The WYSIWYG editor is akin to the one in CoffeeCup's HTML Editor. It's a minimalist visual editor, doing it's best work editing templates. At the same time, it's quite useful as a supplement to the outstanding code editor. The finished page(s) can be uploaded to the web via the included Digital Access software.
Overall, this is an excellent product that can be used by both beginners willing to learn and experienced coders looking for time saving tools, as well as the capability to work with visual editing.
